In 1885, when the Dakota Territory was still untamed, Dakota Wesleyan University was founded in Mitchell. Known as the University of Dakota until 1904, the institution was founded by a group of pioneers associated with the Dakota Conference of the Methodist Church. These men had deep religious convictions about education and the future of their children.
