About University

In 2002, Georgetown University explored the possibility of opening a campus of the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service in Qatar, and in October 2002, it joined four other American universities in opening a campus in Education City in 2005. Former U.S. Ambassador to Qatar Patrick N. Theros called it "the most important development in American higher education in the 21st century."

In 2015, the university expanded its scope to include graduate and professional education and individual study programs in addition to the core Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service degree. In conjunction with this expansion, the university rebranded itself as Georgetown University in Qatar (formerly Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar or SFS-Q).

The campus is also home to the Center for International and Regional Studies (CIRS), GU-Q's premier research institute focusing on the Middle East and the wider Asian region.
