About University

As the oldest local institution of higher education, HKU reflects the unique essence of both Hong Kong’s past and present. Established on 16 March 1910, when Sir Frederick Lugard, the Governor of Hong Kong, laid the foundation stone, the university combines ornate colonial architecture with state-of-the-art laboratories and a progressive approach to teaching and research. Admission to HKU is highly competitive. In 2016, the university received approximately 40,000 applications for undergraduate study, more than 16,000 of which were from outside the Hong Kong school system. For applicants from mainland China, the admission rate was 1 student for every 21 applications.
