Year 1 (S1S2 and A1A2 semesters) Students enrol in the laboratory of the supervisor agreed at application and begin the postgraduate curriculum, which is weighted towards taught coursework in the first year. The department's four groupings — Group A Fundamental Subjects, Group B Standard Subjects, Group C Special Topics, and Advanced and Specialized Subjects — are designed "to enhance the postgraduate research skills and output of each individual, regardless of their undergraduate background". The Graduate School of Engineering notes that as students advance "coursework decreases, and research—conducted in laboratories for their master's or doctoral theses—becomes the main focus". Because IGPCB entrants are admitted to the Integrated Master/PhD Program, the year ends with the Qualifying Examination. The Graduate School of Engineering describes the standard duration as a two-year master's programme in which coursework decreases and laboratory research for the thesis becomes the main focus.
