MEXT (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship — fee waiver as applied by GSP
Separate application
- Holding MEXT scholarship status, or being a prospective MEXT scholar. GSP does not nominate candidates for MEXT itself; applicants arrive with, or are applying separately for, the scholarship.
- "All fees will be waived for MEXT (Monbukagakusho) scholarship students" — that is, the 10,000 yen application fee, the 282,000 yen enrollment fee and tuition. The scholarship's own stipend and coverage terms are set by MEXT and are not restated in the GSP guidelines.
- Not applied for through GSP. For the fee waiver, "Application fees will be waived upon submission of either a certificate of MEXT scholarship status or a Certificate of Admission (applicable for prospective MEXT scholars)", and "MEXT scholarship students should submit a certificate of proof of their scholarship status instead of a certificate of remittance" (in place of document K).
- The GSP Admissions webpage states the waiver more narrowly than the PDF: "However, those who have applied for MEXT scholarships but have not yet enrolled in their host university or institution must pay the application fee." See dataNotes — the two official sources conflict on whether prospective MEXT scholars pay.
Tuition waivers and other financial aid from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences
Separate application
- Enrolled GSP students. "Enrolled students may be eligible to apply for tuition waivers and other financial aid from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, but the competition is very tight."
- Array
- Applied for after enrollment through the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences; the application procedure for tuition exemption and scholarships is administered as part of student support. "We therefore strongly recommend that, prior to enrollment, applicants identify and apply for all suitable financial aid or scholarship opportunities available to them."
- "The GSP Program does not offer any financial aid or scholarship opportunities of its own." Competition is described by the programme as "very tight"; no number of awards is published.
Scholarships, nominations and fee exemptions are competitive unless the programme
states that every admitted student receives the award. Admission on its own does
not guarantee funding.
