Year 1 (S1/S2 term April–July; A1/A2 term October–January) Students enter in April, affiliate with the department of the supervisor who accepted them before application, and begin the core lecture and practice programme alongside their department's lab seminars. Coursework combines the affiliated department's core lectures, core lectures from the other departments of the School, and electives from the Graduate School of Medicine and other schools. The Department of Global Health Policy notes that "the research topic for the thesis needs to be discussed by the end of the first year".
