Merit scholarships and tuition waivers awarded at the recommendation of the University of Tokyo (donor-funded)

Separate application

  • "A limited number of applicants who have exceptional academic records will be awarded scholarships or tuition waivers through the courtesy of donors at the recommendation of the University of Tokyo."
  • "Scholarships or tuition waivers" funded "through the courtesy of donors". The amount, stipend value and waiver proportion are not published.
  • No separate application: the award is decided as part of admission, and applicants opt in on the application form. "To those eligible, the scholarships will be offered simultaneously with the notification of acceptance into the program. The candidates will be requested to confirm their willingness to enter the ITASIA Program by a specified date." The FAQ adds: "Exceptional applicants may be offered a scholarship at the time of the notification of acceptance. However, we strongly encourage applicants to explore all opportunities for scholarships both before and after applying", and "If you are interested, please check 'yes' to be considered for merit-based scholarships on your application form."
  • "A limited number" of awards, restricted to applicants "who have exceptional academic records". Being offered an award is conditional on being admitted, and the candidate must confirm acceptance of the ITASIA place by a specified date. No number of awards is published.

MEXT (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship — University Recommendation, via ITASIA

Separate application

  • Not separately published by ITASIA. "Exceptional applicants may be offered to be candidates of financial aid, including MEXT scholarships and other merit-based scholarships, at the time of the notification of acceptance."
  • Japanese Government scholarship. "Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) Scholarship students are exempt from the examination fee as well as the admission fee and annual tuition." The stipend and other MEXT coverage terms are set by MEXT and are not restated by the programme.
  • There is no open call. "The ITASIA Program does not call for public applications for the University Recommended MEXT Scholarship... If you are interested, please check 'yes' to be considered for merit-based scholarships on your application form."
  • Nomination is at the programme's discretion and is offered only to exceptional applicants at the time of acceptance. The number of nominations is not published.

MEXT (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship — Embassy Recommendation

Separate application

  • The applicant must first pass "the Preliminary Selection Examination given by the Japanese Embassy / Consulate General in your home country". Passing that examination does not by itself give an ITASIA place.
  • Japanese Government scholarship; MEXT scholarship students are exempt from the ITASIA examination fee, admission fee and annual tuition. Coverage terms are set by MEXT.
  • Applied for outside the university, before applying to ITASIA. "After passing the Preliminary Selection Examination, you are requested to take steps as indicated on the international admission page of the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies (GSII) (See 'How to request Letter of Acceptance for MEXT scholarship'). Currently a 'Letter of Acceptance' can be only issued for entrance as an International Research Student (a non-regular course) at the GSII. If you would like to be accepted to the ITASIA Program (a regular course) as an Embassy Recommended MEXT student, you will need to apply for the ITASIA admissions and pass the exam separately after you have received the letter of acceptance from the GSII." MEXT scholarship holders enrolled elsewhere must have their scholarship period extended by their current university and approved by MEXT. The Tuition page lists the MEXT programme under "Scholarships Before Applying".
  • GSII issues Letters of Acceptance only for the non-regular International Research Student course, not for ITASIA itself; ITASIA admission must be won separately through the normal competition.

Chinese Government Graduate Student Overseas Study Program (国家建设高水平大学公派研究生项目)

Separate application

  • Set by the Chinese sponsor. Listed by the programme under "Scholarships Before Applying": "Applicants should consider applying for scholarships prior to enrollment, such as the Japanese Government Monbukagakusho Scholarship program or other government grants in one's home country."
  • Array
  • Applied for directly with the sponsoring government before enrolment; ITASIA links to the programme but administers nothing.
  • An external government scheme with its own rules and quota; no ITASIA involvement is published.

The University of Tokyo Fellowship and other University of Tokyo scholarships

  • "Typically, these scholarships are only available to students who have already been accepted into a program of study at the University of Tokyo."
