International Admission Program in Resilience Engineering — Systems Innovation Course
Programme overview
A two-year, fully English-taught Master's course inside the University of Tokyo's International Admission Program in Resilience Engineering, run by the Department of Systems Innovation of the Graduate School of Engineering on the Hongo Campus. The programme is taught jointly with the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Management and other related departments, but is admitted and awarded department by department: this record covers the Systems Innovation Course only. It trains engineers in resilience engineering — the design of sociotechnical systems that can absorb shocks and adapt to long-term change — combined with the department's own systems-science approach across artefact networks, global circulation systems, socioeconomic systems, advanced knowledge design and service design. Admission for the 2027 cycle is a single International Admission Program route: applicants apply from outside Japan through the T-cens online system, post original documents to the department, and, if they pass the document screening, sit an online interview with a panel of faculty including their preferred supervisor. There is no on-site entrance examination. Entry is October 2027 only.
The course sits inside the Department of Systems Innovation of the Graduate School of Engineering, on the Hongo Campus. Students join a laboratory under a supervisor and combine taught coursework with laboratory research leading to a master's thesis over the standard two-year master's programme. The department describes its taught offering as "lectures of advanced or beyond-disciplinary knowledge related to the key areas constituting the systems innovation studies" plus "basic engineering in their own field" and "applied exercises for acquiring creative thinking and practical application skills". Lectures for the Resilience Engineering programme are provided collaboratively by faculty of the Department of Systems Innovation, the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Management and other related departments, while "Graduate courses are offered by each department." The Graduate School of Engineering states that "students are required to complete at least 30 credits in the master's program" through "a combination of coursework, exercises, and research". Lectures and research supervision are given in English; Japanese language courses are optional.
