Montclair State University is a public institution founded in 1908. Montclair State University is located in New Jersey, about 14 miles west of New York City. Students can get involved in and outside of school life by exploring more than 200 clubs, joining Greek life, or simply participating in "Red Hawk Friday," where students show school spirit by wearing Montclair apparel. Student-athletes can play at the intramural, club, and adult levels. The Montclair Red Hawks have more than 15 intercollegiate sports teams that compete in the NCAA Division III New Jersey Athletic Conference. Bruce Willis, star of the films "Die Hard" and "Pulp Fiction," attended Montclair and later received an honorary degree.

Submitting an application online

Once you submit your application, you will see instructions for paying the $65 nonrefundable application fee (or requesting a fee waiver) on the status page of your application portal. Application fee waivers are currently based on financial need. For information on how to obtain a fee waiver based on financial need, please see the Certification and Signature section of your Montclair State University application and the Profile section of the Common App. If you are applying to a program with an audition fee (Dance, Music, Music Therapy, Musical Theatre, Theatre), you will also see and be able to pay the audition fee on your status page. Submitting an official transcript of your high school diploma

Provide an official high school transcript and a letter of recommendation from your advisor. Please note that Dance, Musical Theatre, and Theatre require two letters of recommendation. One of your letters of recommendation must be specific to your major.

If you would like to submit a resume or a list of extracurricular activities you have participated in, you can upload this document to your application or on the status page after submitting your application. Please note that a resume is required for Dance, Musical Theatre, and Theatre programs, but is optional for all other programs.

Providing test results

Official SAT or ACT scores are not required. Students taking the SAT should enter the CEEB code (002520). Students taking the ACT should enter the ACT school code (2572).

Obtaining a visa

A student visa to the USA F-1 is issued for academic studies in the USA (long-term study). Purpose of the trip: study at accredited colleges and universities in the USA, private high schools or language schools. If the study takes more than 18 hours per week. Students planning to attend Montclair State University on an F-1 visa should provide the necessary financial documentation as soon as possible so that the appropriate immigration forms can be issued. For Fall 2024 students who wish to apply for an I-20, the application process will open in mid-March. You will receive an email with instructions once the I-20 application is available.
