Master's Program, Department of Economics, Division of Economics, Graduate School of Economics
Programme overview
The Department of Economics is the Graduate School of Economics' Advanced International Program: a two-year, research-oriented master's programme at the University of Tokyo's Hongo campus in which English is the main language of instruction and a master's degree can be obtained by taking courses offered in English only. It builds on core sequences in microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics before students specialise in one or more fields — economic theory and game theory, macroeconomic dynamics, labour, public finance and urban economics, industrial organisation, development and international economics, political economy, econometrics and statistics — and write a master's thesis under a supervisor designated in their first year. Admission is by document evaluation followed by an online (Zoom) oral examination on the applicant's research plan; there is no separate international-student selection, and no Japanese-language qualification is required. Graduates go on to doctoral programmes in Japan and abroad or into consulting, financial services, technology firms and government.
The Graduate School of Economics has two divisions and six departments: the Division of Economics (Departments of Economics, Statistics, Area Studies and Economic History) and the Division of Management (Departments of Management and Quantitative Finance). This record covers only the Department of Economics master's programme, which is the Graduate School's Advanced International Program and the only department that does not require Japanese proficiency. "Students can take courses based on their interests and preferences, irrespective of their affiliated division or department", but "students cannot change their departments after enrollment" other than by the exceptional transfer procedure in Article 14 of the Graduate School Rules. The academic year is divided into four terms (S1, S2, A1, A2).
