Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship — Embassy Recommendation

Separate application

  • Candidates who have passed the first screening at a Japanese diplomatic mission in their home country. April 2027 enrollment (Schedule A) only — "Applicable only for April enrollments, not for October enrollments due to a schedule conflict."
  • Monthly stipend, travel and fee coverage set by MEXT. For this programme: "No fees will be collected from Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship students" — the admission fee and tuition are not charged, and "MEXT scholarship students are exempted from paying the examination fee".
  • Two mandatory steps. (1) Complete the ordinary master's application for Schedule A (30 June – 3 July 2026). (2) Complete the government-sponsored scholarship application on the Graduate School's designated site between 1 July and 1 September 2026 (login ID AkxRgQ4G6Y at the new-user registration page), uploading the Passing Certificate of the First Screening issued by the Japanese diplomatic mission, all documents returned by the mission with their official confirmation stamped, and the printed "Application form as a government-sponsored scholarship student". "Only the applications which have completed these two steps above will be considered." Embassy-side procedures must be arranged by the applicant directly with the mission.
  • Number of awards not published by the Graduate School. Applicants must still pass the ordinary entrance examination; the scholarship does not substitute for admission.

MEXT / Chinese Government Scholarship

Separate application

  • Candidates who have passed the first screening at the Japanese diplomatic mission under this category. April 2027 enrollment only.
  • Government scholarship under the MEXT–Chinese Government arrangement. As a MEXT scholarship student, the examination fee, admission fee and tuition are not charged.
  • The same two-step process as the Embassy Recommendation route, with the graduate-school scholarship application open 1 July – 1 September 2026 "set by MEXT/Chinese government".
  • "Notice: Applicable only for April enrollments, not for October enrollments due to a schedule conflict."

Japan–Taiwan Exchange Association Scholarship

Separate application

  • Scholarship candidates of the Japan–Taiwan Exchange Association seeking to enroll in the Graduate School of Economics.
  • Array
  • Applicants contact the Association directly for the scholarship and apply separately for the master's programme; the Graduate School publishes the procedure only in Japanese.

The University of Tokyo Fellowship — Special Scholarship for International Students

Separate application

  • Outstanding, self-funded (privately financed) international students pursuing degrees at the University of Tokyo. Candidates for this programme are drawn from those already admitted.
  • "200,000 yen" per month as a research grant-in-aid, for the standard period of study in the graduate programme.
  • No application by the candidate at the point of admission: "Candidates will be selected from the admitted students, and those chosen will be contacted by GAIA (Group Administering International Affairs) after the selection process at the Graduate School of Economics." The central page adds that "applications must be submitted through the applicant's affiliated or prospective Graduate School."
  • University-wide, not reserved for this programme: 44 new recipients were selected in academic year 2025, bringing the total then receiving the grant to 110 graduate students. Competitive.

Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship for Privately-Financed International Students (JASSO)

Separate application

  • Privately financed international students. "Candidates will be selected from the admitted students and those who are eligible will be contacted by GAIA after the selection process at the Graduate School of Economics."
  • Array
  • Selection is made by the Graduate School from admitted students; eligible students are contacted by GAIA. No separate application is made before admission.
  • Awarded only to admitted students.

Privately sponsored scholarships administered through the University of Tokyo or applied for directly

Separate application

  • "Candidates eligible for the scholarships applied through UTokyo are limited to current and admitted students those who have pre-registered at the Graduate School of Economics, UTokyo." The FAQ states plainly: "To apply for the scholarships, you either have to be enrolled to our graduate school or accepted to our program by passing the entrance examination."
  • Array
  • "In some cases applications are made directly to the sponsoring organizations, while in the others applications are made through UTokyo." "Some scholarships under the direct application category instruct students to receive a proof of confirmation from the Graduate School of Economics. In that case, we set the internal application deadline a few weeks before the closing date of the scholarship application." Deadlines are posted on the Graduate School's Notice page.
  • "Recent increase in the number of international students has made it highly competitive for them to be awarded scholarships." No award is available to applicants before they are accepted.

Admission fee and tuition fee exemption / deferment (University of Tokyo)

Separate application

  • "Students who have difficulties in paying admission fees due to economic reasons and who are recognized as having outstanding academic capabilities", students facing extreme hardship after the death of a financial supporter or a natural disaster within one year prior to admission, and students with other unavoidable circumstances.
  • Full or partial exemption of the admission fee and/or the tuition fee; where an exemption application is submitted, "the payment of the relevant fee will be deferred until the results are determined."
  • Applications are made to the university twice a year, by post or in person at the designated campus office. For 2026 entry the windows ran from 13 February (April entry) and 3 August (October entry) to the last day of the admission procedures; "application documents must be postmarked by the last day of the application period." The 2027 dates are not yet published.
  • Not automatic and not guaranteed; a separate assessment from admission. MEXT scholarship students are not charged these fees in the first place.
Scholarships, nominations and fee exemptions are competitive unless the programme states that every admitted student receives the award. Admission on its own does not guarantee funding.
