International Bioengineering Course (G30-IBP), Master's Global 30 International Admission Program
Programme overview
A two-year Master's course taught in English in the Department of Bioengineering of the Graduate School of Engineering, the University of Tokyo, on the Hongo Campus. It is one of the three courses of the Master's Global 30 International Admission Program and admits only for October entry. The course is aimed at international applicants living outside Japan, who apply entirely online through the T-cens system without travelling to Japan; there is no written entrance examination. G30-IBP concentrates on life science and biotechnology at the point where engineering meets medicine: teaching spans the department's six research fields — mechanobioengineering, bioelectronics, biodevices, chemical bioengineering, biomaterials and bioimaging — and every student carries out master's thesis research in a laboratory. Selection is a preliminary screening on GPA, a 2-3 page statement of study plan for the G30 Program (G30IBP), TOEFL or IELTS, a GRE General Test score and letters of recommendation, after which shortlisted candidates post original documents and are invited to a final internet-based interview. The course leads to a master's degree only; applicants for a doctoral degree must apply through the IME Graduate Programs instead.
G30-IBP sits inside the Department of Bioengineering of the Graduate School of Engineering, which "fuses the seemingly different fields of engineering and life sciences". The department classifies its research "into two areas based on the fundamental academic system: physics, electricity, and mechanics, and chemistry, materials, and life sciences", further divided into six fields. Teaching in the course combines "lectures concerning general bioengineering-related concepts and specific topics in each of the six fields of research" with "more intimate discussion-based seminars both in basic bioscience and bioindustry", and "In addition to these classes, students must conduct a master thesis research in each laboratory." Completion requires at least two years of enrolment, the required courses, at least 30 credits, research guidance, an accepted master's thesis and a passed final examination, with credits from the School of Engineering English Course Group counting towards the requirement.
