Year 1 (from October entry) Students enrol on 1 October at the Hongo Campus and join a laboratory in the Department of Bioengineering. The first year is weighted towards the taught component: lectures on general bioengineering concepts and on specific topics in each of the six research fields, together with discussion-based seminars in basic bioscience and bioindustry, while master's thesis research in the laboratory begins. Credits from the School of Engineering English Course Group count towards the completion requirement. No compulsory course list is published for this course. Lectures on general bioengineering-related concepts Lectures on specific topics in each of the six research fields (mechanobioengineering, bioelectronics, biodevices, chemical bioengineering, biomaterials, bioimaging) Discussion-based seminars in basic bioscience and in bioindustry Courses from the School of Engineering English Course Group (Civil Engineering, Architecture, Electrical/Mechanical Engineering, Terotechnology), whose credits "can count as required credits" Japanese language classes (free, optional, not credited towards completion) Year 2 The second year is centred on laboratory research and the master's thesis, with the balance of the minimum 30 credits completed alongside. "In addition to these classes, students must conduct a master thesis research in each laboratory." The degree is awarded after the thesis is accepted and the final examination passed.
