International Technology Management Course (G30-TMI), Department of Technology Management for Innovation, Master's Global 30 International Admission Program
Programme overview
A two-year Master's course taught in English in the Department of Technology Management for Innovation (TMI) of the Graduate School of Engineering, the University of Tokyo, on the Hongo Campus. It is one of the three courses of the Master's Global 30 International Admission Program and admits only for October entry. G30-TMI trains technology managers rather than laboratory researchers: "The TMI Master's course aims to nurture the next generation of technology managers thorough rigorous training in the theories and practice of innovation management. Courses are delivered by faculty as well as visiting lecturers from industry and government." Teaching is organised into three course groups — Technology Development (Group A), Management Science (Group B) and Intellectual Property Management / Social Strategy (Group C) — with a published minimum of three classes from Group A, three from Group B and one from Group C, plus project-based training with companies, group work, site visits, an optional company internship, overseas training, and a master's thesis on a topic of the student's choosing. Admission requirements differ from the other two Global 30 courses: TOEFL is the only accepted English test — IELTS and GMAT are not accepted — the GRE General Test is required, the GRE Subject Test in Mathematics is strongly recommended, and a Grading Coefficient Calculation Table must be submitted.
G30-TMI sits inside the Department of Technology Management for Innovation of the Graduate School of Engineering. Unlike the other two Global 30 courses, its structure is published: "The curriculum consists of classes offered by the Department of TMI, project-based training courses and the completion of a master's thesis. The classes are divided into three groups based on a main topic of study: Technology Development (Group A), Management Science (Group B), Intellectual Property Management (Group C)." A minimum spread across the three groups is mandated — three Group A classes, three Group B classes and one Group C class. The department adds that "the overall curriculum consists of introductory courses that lay the necessary foundation for a student's studies, project practicums, and TMI research. Introductory courses (required core) are designed to instill the basic methodologies involved in technology management for innovation. In some project practicums, students engage in group work and participate in site visits as a part of their business case study coursework and overseas training." Completion still runs on the Global 30 rules: at least two years of enrolment, the required courses, at least 30 credits, research guidance, an accepted master's thesis and a passed final examination.
