Only the support routes relevant to this programme are listed. Amounts marked as references must be reconfirmed for the applicant's award year.
MEXT (Japanese Government Monbukagakusho) Scholarship — University Recommendation
Separate application
- Array
- Japanese Government scholarship. MEXT Scholarship students "are exempt from" the admission fee and tuition payment required at the admission procedures. Full coverage terms are set by MEXT and are not restated by the programme.
- No separate application is made by the applicant at the point of admission: candidates are selected by the University after the entrance selection. "MEXT scholarship candidates who are selected via recommendation by the University after the examination, will receive a refund of the examination fee directly to their account upon enrollment." The programme FAQ warns that "the numbers of scholarships are limited, and there is no guarantee that all admitted students can receive scholarships."
- Numbers are limited and no guarantee attaches to admission. Past records show G30-TMI entrants receiving MEXT scholarships through the University of Tokyo in several October intakes; see facts[] for the published counts.
MEXT (Japanese Government Monbukagakusho) Scholarship — Embassy Recommendation
Separate application
- Applicants must have "passed the primary selection at the Japanese embassy in their home countries" before applying.
- Japanese Government scholarship awarded through the Japanese embassy process. Holders are exempt from the admission fee and tuition, and candidates who have passed the embassy primary selection are exempt from the 10,000 yen examination fee. Coverage terms are set by MEXT.
- Apply first at the Embassy of Japan in the home country; embassy primary-selection passers then apply to the course via T-cens without paying the examination fee. The Global 30 site signposts this route: "If you are interested in other programs, such as MEXT scholarship through the Japanese Embassy in your home country, please check from here."
- Selection and quota are controlled by MEXT and the Japanese diplomatic mission, not by the Graduate School of Engineering. The programme guidelines mention this route only through the examination-fee waiver.
MEXT Honors Scholarship for Privately-Financed International Students (JASSO)
Separate application
- Array
- Array
- Awarded to enrolled students after entry in October. The programme site describes two routes for enrolled students to apply for scholarships and directs current students to the T-cens Guidance Information "Finance (FOLLOWING ENROLMENT at the Graduate School of Engineering)" and to the School of Engineering portal.
- Six-month award covering October to the following March. The published recipient records for G30-TMI are listed in facts[].
Admission fee exemption and tuition exemption (University of Tokyo)
Separate application
- Array
- Full or partial exemption from the 282,000 yen admission fee and/or the 535,800 yen annual tuition. "In some cases, partial exemption may be granted in lieu of a full exemption."
- "It is possible to apply for Admission Fee Exemption and Tuition Exemption at the University's admission desk during this period. Submitting an application for admission fee exemption and/or tuition exemption allows applicants to defer payment of the admission fee and/or tuition until the screening results are determined."
- "Applicants should be aware that the chances of getting an admission fee and/or tuition exemption are low." MEXT Scholarship students are exempt from these payments in any case.
Scholarships secured before arriving in Japan (via the Global 30 Program Office)
Separate application
- Array
- Array
- "The Global 30 program of Tokyo University's School of Engineering provides economic assistance to students while striving to promote education and research. Applications are carried out through the University of Tokyo. Students should submit their application directly to the Global 30 Office, and receive a primary evaluation based on their academic qualifications." The course page adds that "exceptional candidates will be nominated for a Japanese government scholarship."
- "the numbers of scholarships are limited, and there is no guarantee that all admitted students can receive scholarships." G30-TMI is the only one of the three courses with a department-specific award in the published record — the SE-TMI Scholarship for Foreign Students (one recipient per intake in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019) — alongside the SE-UT Scholarship for Foreign Students, the University of Tokyo / UTokyo Fellowship and SEUT RA Type-IS. The published table ends with the October 2023 intake.
External sponsor scholarships held by past G30-TMI entrants
Separate application
- Set by the external sponsor, not by the University of Tokyo.
- Array
- Applied for directly with the sponsoring government, company foundation or partner institution. The programme records them only as scholarships "secured before arriving in Japan".
- Sponsors recorded against G30-TMI entrants in the published history are the Singapore Government scholarship (October 2011), the Nikon Scholarship (October 2013), the UTokyo-IIT Graduate Student Scholarship (October 2014) and the Matsushita Konosuke Panasonic Scholarship (October 2015 and September 2016). Their appearance in past intakes is not an offer for the 2027 intake.
Scholarships, nominations and fee exemptions are competitive unless the programme
states that every admitted student receives the award. Admission on its own does
not guarantee funding.
