MEXT (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship — fee exemption as applied by GPES

Separate application

  • Foreign-national applicants who already hold MEXT (Monbukagakusho) scholarship status. GPES does not nominate applicants for MEXT and does not describe a university-recommendation route for this programme.
  • "MEXT scholars are exempt from paying these fees" (the JPY 282,000 enrollment fee and the JPY 535,800 annual tuition), and "No application fee is required from Foreign National applicants on MEXT scholarships". The scholarship's stipend and other terms are set by MEXT and are not restated by GPES.
  • Not applied for through GPES. For the fee exemption, MEXT applicants "who are not currently studying / conducting research at the University of Tokyo must submit a certificate of proof of their MEXT scholarship status" in place of the payment receipt (document 2).
  • Applies to applicants who already hold MEXT status; the guidelines do not describe any provision for prospective MEXT scholars who have not yet been awarded the scholarship.

Scholarships applied for after enrollment (University of Tokyo / Graduate School of Arts and Sciences)

Research Assistant (RA) positions

Separate application

  • Enrolled GPES graduate students, at the discretion of the faculty member concerned.
  • Paid work rather than a scholarship: "Graduate students on the GPES program may have a chance to work as a research assistant (RA) and receive some reward." The amount is not published.
  • "For further information, you may contact the faculty you will study with."
  • Availability depends on the individual laboratory; no number of positions or rate of pay is published.

International conference travel grants (Department of Multi-Disciplinary Sciences)

  • Enrolled GPES graduate students presenting at an international research conference.
  • Travel funding to present research at international conferences; amounts are not published on the page. "The Department of Multi-Disciplinary Sciences provides grants for the purpose of enabling GPES graduate students to present their research at international research conferences."
  • "the instructions and application form can be downloaded below" — a separate internal application each round. "Successful recipients of the travel grants are requested to submit a report about their travel after returning to Tokyo."
  • Available only after enrollment. The downloadable instructions and application form published on the page are labelled "second half 2018" and the published recipient reports run to 2018, so the current round's documents may not be posted; grant values are not published.
Scholarships, nominations and fee exemptions are competitive unless the programme states that every admitted student receives the award. Admission on its own does not guarantee funding.
