Year 1 Students enrol in the department of their supervising professor and begin the core curriculum — laboratory work and seminar credits fixed by that department — alongside taught lectures in English, both from within the department and from the wide range of English-taught courses offered elsewhere in the School of Engineering. The course programme is designed individually with the supervisor rather than prescribed: "Each student should develop an individual program of course study under the guidance of his or her supervising professor." Free basic Japanese language classes are available but carry no degree requirement. Core curriculum of the enrolling department (laboratory work and/or seminar): Mechanical Engineering 6 credits (laboratory work and seminar); Electrical Engineering 10 credits laboratory work + 4 credits seminar; Materials Engineering 8 credits laboratory work + 6 credits seminar; Aeronautics & Astronautics 6 credits laboratory work + 6 credits seminar; Chemical System Engineering 22 credits lectures + 8 credits laboratory work and seminar; Precision Engineering 8 credits seminar (no credits for laboratory work) Lectures given in English within the enrolling department (see the department's 2026 time table published on the IME Curriculum & Lectures page) English-taught courses offered by other departments of the School of Engineering ("List of Lectures in English by School of Engineering") Free basic Japanese language classes for students and their spouses Year 2 The second year completes the remaining credits — "Regarding the rest of the credits, the requirement is different in each department. Please consult your supervisor and your tutor for curriculum guidance" — and is centred on the thesis research carried out in the supervisor's laboratory. "In general, all work toward the degree must be completed within a time period of two years."
