The applicant who has Japanese nationality at the time of application will not be eligible." "The applicant must be under 35 years of age as of April 1st in the year of admission." "Military personnel and military civilian personnel cannot apply for the MEXT scholarship." "The applicant must be healthy enough both physically and mentally to pursue academic work." "Previous MEXT Scholarship grantees cannot apply for another MEXT Scholarship until they have been employed or involved in further research at educational institutions in their own country for at least three years." Stipend as of 2026: "Basic Monthly Stipend — Master's student 144,000 yen", plus an "Additional Stipend for Designated Area" of "3,000 yen — Hongo Campus, Komaba Campus, Sagami
- No separate scholarship application: "When you apply during this application period [September Application], you will automatically be included in the selection for the 3 types of scholarship offered by the IME Graduate Program: MEXT scholarship, Scholarship sponsored by the University of Tokyo, and Scholarship sponsored by Graduate School of Engineering." "At September Application, top qualified applicants among them will be nominated as candidates for scholarships provided by IME Graduate Program." Nominees are informed at the end of January 2027.
- Not available in the July or January rounds: "Scholarship by IME Graduate Program will not be provided in July Application"; "*Scholarship by IME Graduate Program will not be provide in January Application." "The MEXT Scholarship will not be offered to students who are already receiving grants from other sources." Applicants who pursue MEXT through a Japanese embassy cannot enrol in IME at all. Numbers recently awarded through IME: 2022: 1; 2023: 3; 2024: 8; 2025: 11; 2026: 4. "The number of each scholarship may vary every year."

- "The total amount of scholarship stipend guaranteed by (2)(3) is almost the same as (1)" — that is, comparable in stipend value to the MEXT Scholarship.
- Automatic consideration for all September Application candidates; no separate application is made.
- September Application only. Numbers recently awarded through IME: 2022: 3; 2023: 3; 2024: 1; 2025: 2; 2026: 1. "The number of each scholarship may vary every year." Whether the entrance fee and tuition exemptions that accompany the MEXT award also apply here is not published.
Scholarship sponsored by the Graduate School of Engineering (through IME)
Separate application
- "Top qualified September Applicants who have exceptional academic records". No age, nationality or income criteria are published for this scheme.
- "The total amount of scholarship stipend guaranteed by (2)(3) is almost the same as (1)" — comparable in stipend value to the MEXT Scholarship.
- Automatic consideration for all September Application candidates; no separate application is made.
- September Application only. This is the largest of the three schemes by volume. Numbers recently awarded through IME: 2022: 10; 2023: 14; 2024: 2; 2025: 10; 2026: 8. "The number of each scholarship may vary every year."
Entrance Fee and Annual Tuition exemption (self-supporting students)
Separate application
- Array
- "Self-supporting students can apply for the exemption of Entrance Fee and Annual Tuition, Entrance Fee could be exempted up to a half of the full amount. Annual Tuition could be exempted a half or the whole of the total amount." The General Application Guidelines add that "Submitting an application
- "It is possible to apply for Admission Fee Exemption and Tuition Exemption at the University's admission desk during this period" (the designated admission procedures period).
- "Applicants should be aware that the chances of getting an admission fee and/or tuition exemption are low. In some cases, partial exemption may be granted in lieu of a full exemption." MEXT Scholarship students are exempt from these fees in any case, so the scheme is aimed at self-supporting students.
Private scholarships available after enrolment
Separate application
- Open to enrolled self-supporting students: "IME Students who are not awarded any scholarship, including the scholarships other than the ones offered by IME Graduate program, are called self-supporting students: they are responsible for their own fees and living expenses."
- Array
- "After entering The University of Tokyo, self-supporting students have chances to apply for several kinds of private scholarships." Details are published by the Office of International Students at http://ois.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp/students_life/selfsupported.html
- "However, please note that many well qualified students compete for these scholarships and that the scholarship amounts are often lower than the MEXT Scholarship. Basically there are almost no scholarships available before your enrollment."
Scholarships, nominations and fee exemptions are competitive unless the programme
states that every admitted student receives the award. Admission on its own does
not guarantee funding.
