Programs in English at Komaba (PEAK)
Programme overview
PEAK (Programs in English at Komaba) is the University of Tokyo's four-year undergraduate degree scheme taught entirely in English, run by the College of Arts and Sciences on the Komaba Campus and open since October 2012 to students who received their secondary education in a language other than Japanese. One shared admissions process leads into one shared Junior Division (years 1-2, the International General Education Program, a broad liberal arts curriculum with compulsory Japanese language courses), after which students move into the Senior Division (years 3-4) on the track they chose when applying: the International Program on Japan in East Asia (Department of Humanities and Social Sciences) or the International Program on Environmental Sciences (Department of Interdisciplinary Sciences). Graduates receive a Bachelor of Liberal Arts. IMPORTANT: admission to PEAK is closing. The University of Tokyo states plainly that 'Admission to PEAK will end with the Fall 2026 enrollment.' (s2) The PEAK Undergraduate Admissions Office confirms that 'The Admission for September 2026 Enrollment will be the last student recruitment for the PEAK. Following this admission, we will no longer recruit new students.' (s4) The September 2026 intake documented in this record is therefore the final PEAK intake; applications for it closed on December 9, 2025 and the University will not run a further PEAK admission cycle. Students already enrolled, and those enrolling between fall 2025 and fall 2026, continue their studies at PEAK until graduation, and PEAK will continue to exist until all PEAK students have graduated (s3). The University attributes the closure to the opening of the new UTokyo College of Design in fall 2027, which will carry forward the degree-entirely-in-English initiative at a larger scale (s3).
One admissions process, one Junior Division, two Senior Division programs. Years 1-2 (semesters 1-4) are spent in the Junior Division of the College of Arts and Sciences on the International General Education Program — a broad liberal arts curriculum in English with compulsory Japanese language courses. Years 3-4 (semesters 5-8) are spent in the Senior Division (the Faculty of Arts and Sciences) on the program the student selected at application: the International Program on Japan in East Asia, within the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, or the International Program on Environmental Sciences, within the Department of Interdisciplinary Sciences. Graduation from the Senior Division requires 76 credits, including a Senior Thesis. The academic year runs in two semesters (spring S and autumn A), each divided into two terms.
