Year 1 of the Master's program Students join their department's master's programme and their supervisor's laboratory, and begin GSGC's own obligations — the exchange meeting seminar and quarterly meetings with the assigned secondary supervisor. "As a general rule, the following credits are required: Master's program: 30 or more credits. The number of necessary credits shall be determined by each department. Students are encouraged to visit the department Web page for further information." GSGC(FoPM) students additionally begin the eight FoPM course credits and take the Diversity and Ethics Training in this year. Courses required by the relevant department (department-set, at least 30 credits over the master's programme) Attendance and presentation at the GSGC exchange meeting seminar Quarterly research-progress meetings with the GSGC secondary supervisor, with a signed form submitted to the Graduate School Office after each meeting GSGC(FoPM) only: Diversity and Ethics Training, plus progress towards the eight FoPM course credits Year 2 of the Master's program — Qualifying Examination and thesis The second year centres on laboratory research and the master's thesis, and contains the GSGC Qualifying Examination: "Master's students must pass a Qualifying Examination to stay in the program throughout their Doctoral studies." Passing it is the screening required to proceed to the doctoral course. GSGC(FoPM) students begin their international research experience — "joint research or a corporate internship abroad during the end of the second year of their Master's studies".
