GSGC course scholarship (monthly stipend)

Separate application

  • Enrolment on GSGC. There is no separate scholarship application and no separate scholarship selection; the stipend attaches to a place on the course. Note the reverse does not hold — being awarded a place is the outcome of the admission selection, and holding or seeking other funding does not create an entitlement to admission.
  • 180,000 yen per month, paid as a stipend. "We will provide a stipend of 180,000 yen per month while the student is on the course (for two years while they are in the Master's program, and for three years while they are in the Doctoral program)." It is a living stipend only: it does not waive the ent
  • No separate application. Applicants apply for admission to GSGC through the GSGC online application system; students admitted and enrolled on the course receive the stipend. "The scholarship will be paid automatically to your designated personal bank account. You will have to open a bank account in Japan and provide us the information." Students must also "prepare and submit a document stating that they are not receiving any other scholarship funds or have other benefactors."
  • Strictly exclusive of other funding: "Note that students may not receive a scholarship additional to the GSGC scholarship. Students who receive the GSGC scholarship may no longer receive other financial aid." The categories that cannot be combined with it are students sponsored by the national government of Japan, students accepted as a JSPS Research Fellow (Doctoral Course), students receiving JASSO scholarship loans, international students receiving the MEXT scholarship or the JASSO Honors Scholarship, students receiving scholarships from their home country, and students receiving scholarships from the University of Tokyo. Holders "will not be eligible for the 25,000-yen monthly Grant for the Promotion of Doctorate Researchers". "The names of all grantees of the GSGC program are to be made public." "Students who receive the GSGC scholarship are not allowed to do part-time jobs except for Teaching Assistants (TAs)/Research Assistants (RAs) on campus and activities that the Program Director regards as necessary for educational and research purpose." Payment stops during a leave of absence or long absence, and the Enrollment Agreement issued to admitted students governs "the suspension or termination of scholarship payments, and how disciplinary actions effect the GSGC scholarship", including in cases of poor academic performance. Continuation beyond the master's stage depends on passing the Qualifying Examination screening into the doctoral course; a GSGC student accepted as a JSPS Research Fellow "are required to remain in GSGC through their Doctoral years, while not receiving the GSGC scholarship."

TAKUETSU (Excellence) Research Assistantship — GSGC(FoPM) students

Separate application

  • FoPM students. "Students who are accepted as JSPS Research Fellows or who receive Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarships or any scholarships from the University of Tokyo cannot be appointed as TRAs, but may apply for FoPM. Students who do not wish to be appointed as TRAs, for example, because they are receiving other scholarships or have concerns about dependent exemption, may also apply for the program."
  • "FoPM students may be appointed as TAKUETSU (Excellence) Research Assistants (TRAs) and be paid 170,000 yen per month for Master's students and 180,000 yen for Doctoral students for the research that you perform under this assistantship." Paid employment for research performed, not a fee waiver.
  • By appointment after enrolment in FoPM; there is no applicant-stage application. Admission to GSGC(FoPM) does not by itself constitute an appointment — the pages say students "may be appointed".
  • "TRAs are not allowed to work as Research Assistants, but are encouraged to work as Teaching Assistants on campus." "Income tax will be deducted from your TRA salary every month. You must therefore make a year-end adjustment or file a final tax return." A high enough annual income removes dependent status on a parent's or spouse's health insurance and may create resident's-tax liability. "When a FoPM student is accepted as a JSPS Research Fellowship for Young Scientists, you are required to stay in FoPM, while not receiving this assistantship." Entrance Fee and Tuition Fee Exemption (University of Tokyo)

Separate application

  • "In general, both the Admission Fee and Tuition Fee must be paid. However, exemptions are available in extenuating circumstances and may be granted to a limited number of students who meet the eligibility criteria." The GSGC guideline states only: "Entrance Fee and Tuition Fee exemption systems are available. For details, please contact the office shown in 9. Contact Address below."
  • Full or partial exemption from the entrance fee and/or tuition.
  • Applied for after admission, through the University's Student Scholarship and Welfare Group, during the designated submission period notified in the admission procedure.
  • "may be granted to a limited number of students who meet the eligibility criteria" — not an entitlement and not linked to the admission decision. Note that the GSGC stipend is classed as a University of Tokyo award for the purposes of the no-double-funding rule, so students should confirm the interaction with the Graduate School Office.

JSPS Research Fellowship for Young Scientists (DC)

Separate application

  • Doctoral-course students. Applying for it is a stated condition of being on GSGC: "GSGC students are expected to apply for a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Research Fellowship for Young Scientists (Doctoral Course)", and the overview page lists "Those who apply for a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Research Fellowship for Young Scientists (Doctoral Course)" among the eligibility requirements for the course.
  • Array
  • A separate application to JSPS, made at the doctoral stage.
  • Recorded here because the obligation to apply attaches from the point of joining GSGC, but the fellowship itself belongs to the doctoral stage, which is out of scope for this master's record. A GSGC student who is accepted "are required to remain in GSGC through their Doctoral years, while not receiving the GSGC scholarship" — the fellowship replaces, rather than supplements, the GSGC stipend.
Scholarships, nominations and fee exemptions are competitive unless the programme states that every admitted student receives the award. Admission on its own does not guarantee funding.
