Year 1 (S1S2 and A1A2 semesters) Students enrol in October and are allocated to a research unit and supervising faculty member. The first year is weighted towards English-taught coursework, studio work and fieldwork alongside the start of laboratory research. The School of Engineering describes the master's programme as "a combination of coursework, exercises, and research", noting that "as students progress to higher levels, coursework decreases, and research — conducted in laboratories for their master's or doctoral theses — becomes the main focus".
