MEXT Scholarship (Embassy Recommendation)
Separate application
- "Opportunities for Japanese government scholarships (MEXT) are available via application at the Japanese embassy in the applicant's home country. Each department at the Graduate School of Engineering has a different policy regarding MEXT Embassy scholarships. It is the applicant's responsibility to confirm the policy with the relevant department." Candidates who have been granted the scholarship through embassy recommendation "must submit a certificate verifying your preliminary selection, issued by the embassy."
- Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) scholarship awarded through the Japanese embassy process. MEXT Scholarship students are exempt from the admission fee and tuition, and embassy-recommendation candidates who have passed the primary selection "are not required to pay" the 10,000 yen examination fee
- Apply at the Japanese embassy in the home country first, then apply to the department through T-cens with the embassy's certificate of preliminary selection. The department links to the Office of International Students' embassy-recommendation page for the procedure.

Private Organizations' Scholarships recommended through the Graduate School of Engineering
Separate application
- "Candidates who pass the academic merit-based selection but have not been offered one of the above-mentioned scholarships can still apply for other financial support. The Graduate School of Engineering recommends several qualified candidates to scholarship foundations on a merit basis."
- Array
- "International students who wish to apply for a scholarship requiring a university recommendation must first register in the system managed by the administration office during the designated registration periods. Registration is open twice a year: in February and August. The School will decide which scholarships to recommend students for. Therefore, students cannot choose which university-recommended scholarships to apply for." The department adds that "Students who have already registered in the past, but wish to do so again, will need to complete the registration process again with all the required documents."
- Registration is required in each cycle; students cannot choose which scholarship they are recommended for; "applications for financial aid are extremely competitive."
JASSO Honors Scholarship / Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship for Privately-Financed International Students
Separate application
- Privately-financed international students with full-time degree student status at the University of Tokyo. "After enrolling, there are several scholarship opportunities for students with full-time degree student status at the University of Tokyo. The Graduate School of Engineering recommends several qualified self-financed students to scholarship foundations on a merit basis."
- Array

- "Please note that applications for financial aid are extremely competitive. Many international students, both prospective and on-going, apply for these highly competitive funds."
External sponsorships that students apply for directly (JICA, LPDP, Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association, China Scholarship Council, home-country and university funds)
Separate application
- Varies by sponsor; several are nationality-restricted — LPDP is "Applicable to Indonesian nationals only", the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association scholarship is "Applicable to Taiwanese nationals only", and the IITH-Japan FRIENDSHIP Scholarship 2 is "Applicable to IIT-Hyderabad students only". The Department of Urban Engineering lists "JICA 'Innovative Asia' / Scholarship to Japan" among available programmes.
- Array
- Apply directly to the sponsor. "Along with the application for a scholarship, you must apply to the Graduate School of Engineering through T-cens at the same time, otherwise your application is incomplete and you will not be considered for entry." Applicants must "Write sources of funding and funding status (intend to apply, have applied, etc.) on the Finance page" and keep the status updated through T-cens; confirmed awards require uploading the foundation's letter and terms. A Letter of Acceptance "is only officially issued after you secure admission to the department/program you are applying for."
- "Securing a scholarship can be a lengthy process... You should be aware that it is difficult to align the first scholarship payment with the enrolment period. Application and/or registration for a scholarship do not guarantee that you will successfully receive funding."

Submitting an application for admission fee exemption and/or tuition exemption allows applicants to defer payment of the admission fee and/or tuition until the screening results are determined." After enrolment, tuition waiver applications open twice a year.
- "Applicants should be aware that the chances of getting an admission fee and/or tuition exemption are low. In some cases, partial exemption may be granted in lieu of a full exemption." MEXT Scholarship students do not need it, being exempt from these payments.
