International Graduate Program in the Field of Civil Engineering and Infrastructure Studies

Programme overview

A two-year, fully English-taught Master's programme run by the Department of Civil Engineering of the Graduate School of Engineering, the University of Tokyo, on the Hongo Campus. Running since 1982 as the department's International Graduate Program, it trains international students to become leaders in infrastructure technology, planning, disaster mitigation and environmental management. Admission is by document screening only — applicants apply from outside Japan via the T-cens online system and do not travel to Tokyo for an entrance examination. Three admission courses exist, each tied to a funding source: University Recommendation (department nomination to MEXT, ADB-JSP, Ueda and other scholarships, October 2027 entry), External Scholarships (applicants who already hold or are seeking outside funding such as JICA or LPDP, April or October 2027 entry) and MEXT Embassy Recommendation (candidates who have passed primary selection at a Japanese embassy, April or October 2027 entry).

The programme sits inside the Department of Civil Engineering of the Graduate School of Engineering. Students are admitted to a laboratory/research group and combine coursework with laboratory-based research supervision leading to a master's thesis. The Graduate School of Engineering states that "students are required to complete at least 30 credits in the master's program" through a combination of coursework, exercises and research, over a standard two-year master's programme. Taught lectures and research supervision are delivered in English; the department offers 40 English-taught lectures and students may add English-taught courses from related departments, giving over 100 courses in total.
