MEXT Scholarship (University Recommendation)

Separate application

  • "below the age of 35 as of April 1, 2027, with the nationality of a country with diplomatic relations with the Japanese government". Available only through the University Recommendation Course.
  • Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) scholarship. MEXT Scholarship students "are exempt from" paying the admission fee and tuition. The full coverage terms are set by MEXT and are not restated in the programme guideline.
  • Apply to the University Recommendation Course via T-cens. Those who pass the preliminary selection become scholarship candidates through the department's nomination and "are required to apply for either scholarship by early February 2027". Nomination and passing the preliminary selection do not guarantee an award.
  • "A few scholars are expected."

MEXT Scholarship (Embassy Recommendation)

Separate application

  • "Only those who has passed the primary selection at the Japanese embassy in their home countries are able to apply to the degree course at the Department of Civil Engineering." Applicants must first apply at the Embassy of Japan in their home country.
  • Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) scholarship awarded through the Japanese embassy process. MEXT Scholarship students are exempt from the admission fee and tuition, and embassy-recommendation candidates who have passed primary selection are exempt from the 10,000 yen examination fee.   • Apply at the Japanese embassy first; after passing the embassy primary selection, apply to the department via T-cens with the stamped MEXT document set. Results are notified by the Office of International Students by email in mid-September.
  • Selection and quota are controlled by MEXT and the Japanese diplomatic mission, not by the department. Departmental acceptance does not by itself constitute the scholarship award.

ADB-Japan Scholarship Program (ADB-JSP)

Separate application

  • "below the age of 36 as of April 1, 2027 with full-time professional working experience for two years or longer". Available through the University Recommendation Course.

Ueda Memorial Foundation Scholarship

In such cases, the Department of Civil Engineering issues conditional acceptance letters for applicants who pass the Departmental selection process." The official admission letter is issued only after an official scholarship award letter (or an equivalent accredited by the department) is received.

Admission Fee Exemption and Tuition Exemption (University of Tokyo)
